According to local folklore, the name Vung Chua (Pagoda Pool) originates from a centuries-old pagoda that once stood here, nestled in a quiet and serene setting akin to a peaceful pool. Unfortunately, only the foundation of the pagoda remains today.

Yen Island, originally known as “Hon Nom” or South Wind Island due to its wind direction, earned its current name from the abundant salanganes that make their homes here.

The region has gained popularity as the final resting place of military genius, Vo Nguyen Giap, attracting visitors not only for its connection to the admired general but also for its pristine natural beauty.

Travelers can easily reach General Vo Nguyen Giap’s Grave by car, bus, or motorbike via the 1A highway, located north of Dong Hoi City’s center. As they approach the Vung Chua – Yen Island area, a striking white stone statue of the general greets them by the roadside. From there, it’s a pleasant 2km walk to the general’s resting place.
