A Taste of Kindness: Free Meals for the Needy in Southern Vietnam

A heartwarming initiative is bringing smiles and warmth to those in need in Thuan An City, Vietnam. On Phan Chu Trinh Street, in Lai Thieu Ward, a unique kitchen has opened its doors, offering a haven of love and compassion.

This “Kitchen of Love” welcomes the disadvantaged, the elderly, poor children, and those struggling to make ends meet, such as lottery ticket vendors, low-income employees, and motorbike taxi drivers. With a focus on community and charity, the kitchen provides free, nutritious meals to those who need them most.

Xuyen, a 65-year-old motorbike taxi driver, and his wife, who sells lottery tickets, are regular visitors. They shared their gratitude for the kitchen, explaining how it has helped them save money and enjoy delicious, safe meals. The couple is just one of many who benefit from this generous initiative.

Chanh, a septuagenarian from Binh Nham Ward, shared his surprise and delight at the staff’s kindness during his first visit. He was greeted warmly and guided to a table, where he enjoyed a free, hearty meal. The kitchen prioritizes the elderly and disabled, ensuring they receive special attention and care.

The meals provided are not just simple fare but a wholesome feast. In addition to cooked rice, a main course, and side dishes, guests are treated to ice tea and sometimes even fruit as dessert. The menu changes daily, offering a variety of delicious options, including stewed chicken, meatballs, and caramelized pork with tofu or shrimp. Each serving is a labor of love, prepared with care and the finest ingredients.

The brain behind this initiative is Tran Van Tuan, a 46-year-old resident of Lai Thieu Ward. Inspired by his mother’s charitable spirit, he always wanted to do something meaningful for his community. After facing challenges in building a nursing home, he decided to channel his efforts into creating this kitchen, which opened on June 18 this year.

Tuan’s dedication to this cause is evident in his significant financial contributions. He spent nearly VND1 billion ($32,210) to build the kitchen and pays VND10 million ($392.5) in monthly rent. Additionally, he donates almost VND10 million daily to purchase ingredients, ensuring the kitchen can continue to serve those in need.

The kitchen has become a family affair, with Tuan’s relatives and members of the local Red Cross unit pitching in. Together, they prepare and serve meals with love and compassion. Open from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, Monday to Friday, the kitchen provides over 600 free meals daily, a testament to its impact and popularity.

Tuan’s vision doesn’t stop there. He plans to expand his charitable efforts by providing free meals to poor patients in local hospitals. With a compassionate heart, he wants to do more to help those in need, hoping his health will allow him to continue these noble endeavors.

The Kitchen of Love is more than just a place to eat; it’s a symbol of community, compassion, and hope. Through the dedication of Tran Van Tuan and his team, this initiative is making a tangible difference in the lives of Vietnam’s most vulnerable, one delicious meal at a time.
