Vietnamese artist achieves silver medal in international manga awards

Nachi’s work has stood out among 587 other artists from around the world, even though it’s just a one-shot comic. Inspired by her passion for astronomy, the story revolves around the daily lives of celestial bodies such as the Sun, Earth, Moon, Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter. These celestial bodies work together to protect and sustain life on Earth.

“I enjoy learning about astronomy, but I’m not very good at math, so my dream of working for NASA is nearly impossible. That’s why I try to tell stories about this topic from my own perspective and imagination,” she said.

Through meticulous illustrations and giving planets and stars human-like qualities, Nachi hopes to bring astronomy closer to people in a simpler way.

The series will consist of three chapters, with the first one set to be released next year.

“I didn’t expect much from my work, so I am extremely happy and honored to have received this award,” she told Tuoi Tre newspaper.

The Japan International Manga Award, established in 2007, is an annual event organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to recognize manga artists worldwide who contribute to the development of manga culture. It is one of the most prestigious international comic awards, with all works carefully selected by the MoFA and renowned manga artists like Machiko Satonaka.

Including Nachi’s award, Vietnam has now won a total of five prizes at the Japan International Manga Award. In 2012, “Dat Rong” (Dragon Land) won bronze, followed by “Long Than Tuong” (Holy Dragon Imperator) winning silver in 2015, “Dia Nguc Mon” (Gateway to Underworld) winning silver in 2016, and “Bam thay Tuong, co thay Vu de tim!” (Rain in a Moon Night) winning bronze in 2022.
